About Pastor Miles

From humble beginnings to spiritual greatness, Pastor Claudell Miles’ journey is a testament to the power of faith, family, and divine purpose. Born in Oklahoma in 1941 and raised in the sun-drenched heart of Coolidge, Arizona, he was the seventh of eleven children in a home steeped in responsibility and reverence. Sundays were sacred—his mother made sure the family was in church without fail. It was there that his young spirit awakened.

By age nine, Claudell's curiosity about God's Word grew into something far deeper. While other children played after service, he stayed behind, drawn to the quiet power of Bible study with pastors, deacons, and elders. Their teachings left an indelible mark on his heart. That sacred curiosity became his compass for life.

Pastor Miles’ greatest gift was his profound compassion for people and his unwavering commitment to discipleship. He didn’t just preach—he lived his message. Whether stepping into everyday conversations or moments of crisis, he brought Christ’s presence like a warm light breaking through. He anchored his life on three immovable pillars: Family, Faith, and Community. These were not just beliefs—they were the rhythm of his soul.

His love for Jesus Christ poured out through every fiber of his being. Pastor Miles gave generously more than financial giving—he gave of his time, strength, wisdom, and empathy. He studied scripture for hours, burning with the desire to share the goodness of God. His devotion was contagious, and his presence brought on alertness to our responsibilities as God's children. He was the kind of man who made you believe again.

At 34, Pastor Miles answered a sacred call. What began as intimate prayer and Bible studies in living rooms grew quickly into a movement. It drew young believers who were passionate, idealistic, and anchored in faith. Together, they formed a family of firebrands with hearts ablazed for God. Among them were: the Pastor's wife, Mrs. Bobbie Miles, the Pastor's Mother Ms. Roberta Miles,  Rev. Royal Thompson, Minister Freddie and Mrs. Lynn Daniels, Mr. Fred and Mrs. Candy Barr, Mr. Arthur and Mrs. Jo Coles, Mr. Isaiah and Mrs. Evelyn Oakes, Mr. Peter and Mrs. Lynn Morton, Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Donna Meigs, and Mr. Robert Yancy—the pioneers of Salt of the Earth Christian Church, and their families.

Through countless prayers and unwavering hope, Pastor Miles led the search for a permanent sanctuary. In 1977, he and his devoted wife Mother Bobbie Miles laid eyes on a humble property at 4221 S. 4th Street in South Phoenix. That moment became sacred ground. The church found its home—and the people found their spiritual harbor. In November 2025, Salt of the Earth Baptist Church will celebrate 50 incredible years. Though Pastor Miles was called home to glory on February 10, 2012, his legacy and through Christ, remains alive in every sermon, every act of kindness, and every beating heart that walks through those church doors.

Pastor Miles taught us that it’s not the grandeur of a building, but the power of love and faith that makes a church eternal. His life speaks still—a message of hope, humility, and Heaven's call.  We, the Salt of the Earth family, stand proud. We carry that legacy with grace, filled with the spirit of simple courtesy and the radiant love of Christ that binds us together.

Pastor Jerry Hillman

2013 through 2023

A Tribute to Pastor Jerry Hillman’s Faithful Service

For a decade, Pastor Jerry Hillman faithfully shepherded Salt of the Earth Baptist Church with wisdom, grace, and unwavering devotion. Alongside his beloved wife Charlotte, he kept the doors of the church open—not just physically, but spiritually—welcoming all who sought refuge, hope, and truth.

Week after week, Pastor Hillman delivered messages that stirred hearts and challenged minds. His sermons were not mere words, but living reflections of God’s truth—thought-provoking, deeply studied, and always resonant with the needs of his congregation. As both a pastor and a professor, he brought depth and clarity to the Word, guiding his flock with discernment and compassion.

Together, Pastor Hillman and Charlotte built lasting connections throughout the community, nurturing a vibrant and united gathering of believers. Their presence was a steady light, illuminating paths and strengthening bonds that will endure long beyond their tenure.

Pastor Hillman’s final message to the church was delivered on July 30, 2023—a moment marked by gratitude, reflection, and love. His leadership has left an indelible mark on our hearts, and we thank God for the ten remarkable years he gave in service to this church.
